This proposed tree has been compiled from various sources, with contributions by Tom McMurray, Gail Martin, Linda Lawson and others. Much of it is speculative. Corrections and or additions are welcomed. Pat McDonald mmcdonald3@houston.rr.com
Most of these people seem to have left Roane County before 1860 census.

In view of the age difference, there is always the possibility that this William Holland had a previous wife, and of course, other children. One might expect a son named William, or perhaps one of the known children to have a middle name, William.

Patrick does not appear in the 1850 household of Mary Short, but it is believed he is a son, due to other references. He may have been on military duty in 1850? His age is estimated to be such that he would be one of the older sons.

28 Oct 1854 - James Thomas Holland died on the 10th inst. near Post Oak Springs--son of JOHN W. and MARY ANN HOLLAND, age 4 years 4 months. [in the 1850 census, John and AMY A. had a four months old child, James T.]
4 Nov. 1854--Amanda B. Holland died on Thursday, 2d inst, near Post Oak Springs, of flux. Daughter of JOHN W. and MARY A. HOLLAND, aged 2 years and 2 months. This is the second bereavement of this kind which the fond parents of the deceased have experienced with the past few weeks.
The 1850 Roane Census has another John Holland family, but the preponderance of evidence points toward this man as being son of William and Mary Short Holland.
There is no way to know which John Holland is referenced here:

4. MARY2 HOLLAND (WILLIAM1) was born Abt. 1816. She married JOHN BRANDON/BURNETT November 19, 1834 in Roane Co. TN.
Again, we have families in Roane with different spellings ( Brannan/ Brandon/ Branham/ Branson) , and it is difficult to determine the 1840 census, but in 1850, it would appear this couple would be our Mary Holland:
#1702 John Brandon 37 SC, Mary 34 TN (no land value)
Pleasant 14, William 12, Nancy J. 11, Madison 9, John 7, Lewis 5, Elizabeth 5/12 - all born TN#1703 is Mary McPherson 73 NC, Henry 33 $550. #1709 is John and Elizabeth (Holland) Doughty.
Mary McPherson appears to be widow of Henry (Sr.?) who died 30 May 1817 in Roane, with Polly McPherson and William EATON, admrs. Recall that Henry McPherson, John W. Eaton, and Jennet McPherson were witnesses to the will of John Rouden/Rowden.
