MARRIAGE: Washington Co, TN; A deposition in Roane Co, by Jesse Matlock in 1870 (his age 72 1/2), he states his sister married Thomas Littleton in Washington Co, TN.

In “Roots of Roane County, TN” , Snyder E. Roberts writes (concerning the MATLOCK family)

“Many of the early settlers south of Clinch River in eastern Roane County made sizeable contributions to Roane history.  In many cases, descendants soon spread throughout Roane, and their names have been perpetuated to this day…….

WILLIAM MATLOCK who bought land on the Tennessee River before 1800, and had a grist mill on Cave Creek in 1801, was probably a brother to Jason Matlock.  William left Roane about 1812-3 for Monroe County, Indiana.”

The children of William Matlock are named, including:  MARY MATLOCK married (1794) THOMAS LITTLETON, and ROSANNA MATLOCK married (1812) DAVID BREAZEALE.

Information on the William Matlock family provided by Mr. William Wood, Godfrey, IL.

TOMBSTONE: Thomas Littleton, ---- - ----, Cave Creek Cem, Roane Co, TN; South Carolina Pvt, 5th SC Regt Rev War. *NOTE: Thomas was not old enough to fight in the Rev War. Why was this marker put on his grave? Wanda

Thomas Kitchen makes oath that George Matlock the plaintiff in the above suit departed this life about the 10th of November in the year 1826 and that he saw him buried in the county of Hendric in the state of Indiana. He said that the horses were not what Matlock said they were to be. He also states that the reason he did not appeal was due to a certain Eli Lea from the state of Ohio or Indiana (perhaps) when Matlock deceased was in the county. He petitions at that time he was not advised there was any irregularity in the proceedings - but is now advised the whole is utterly void, and he believes said Lea has no legal right to control said suits in any way whatever. Sworn to in open court on May 1st 1828. Sig: Thomas Littleton (looks like Thomas's signature)....

PatMc's Note:

That leaves out NANCY LITTLETON who married ELI HART 04 Nov 1816 in Roane County.  If Nancy is not a daughter of Thomas and Mary, who could she be?  There did not seem to be any other Littletons around to be possible parents.

Roane County Roots, Fall 1997, page 3, has an article submitted by Marlene Scott, who is descended from Nancy Littleton Hart.  In it, she writes:

“Roane County Archives contain the papers of Capt. McElwee who on two separate occasions wrote of a NANCY MATLOCK, whose father disinherited her when she married "the good ne'er do well"  1--ELI HART and 2-MILLER HART.”

Could this be NANCY LITTLETON?

The Roane County Heritage Commission web site has a listing for a case in Circuit Court, 1865, involving George Littleton and Jesse Matlock  http://www.roanetnheritage.com/research/military/civil%20war/cases/06.htm
