Son of John MCKINNEY & Nancy HORN. Married Jul. 1832? to Elizabeth HOWARD. There is no record of his marriage in Roane Co., TN and he does not appear in the 1830 or 1840 Roane Co. censuses although he is listed in the 1830 Roane Co., TN tax list with 340A, 1WP, & 1BP, and in the 1840 Roane Co., TN tax list with 350A worth $1500. He is depicted in the 1840 census 200101-21001.
Probably married in Morgan Co., TN since Elizabeth was from there. Buried in McKinney Cemetery in Roane Co., TN on the Boeing property (AEC No. 13A). His stone says "Life's Race Well Run, Life's Work Well Done, Life's Crown Well Won". The 1850 Roane County, TN census says he was 44 years of age, a farmer born in Tennessee, wife Elizabeth aged 38 born in TN, with $2,000 worth of land. Father of 11 children, all of whom married into Roane County, TN families.
JAMES L. MCKINNEY and William G. SMITH were the executors of his estate. On 10 Dec. 1828, together with his brother, JESSE MCKINNEY, ANANAIS purchased from several members of the ARNOLD family, 148A on the waters of the Clinch River for $300.[2] Ananais purchased 200A "formerly known as Indian Bottoms" for $800 from the heirs of JOHN MCKINNEY, his father. The land lay on the south side of the Clinch River, being part of a 250A NC grant to Jeremiah MCCLAIN in 1788. Adjoining land owners were James ROBINSON and "Mr. ROBERTS".[3]

Children
James and Adaline had three sons and siz daughters. Their son, Edward Walker McKinney (1875-1958) married Nancy Stinecipher. Their children are the descendants that carry on the McKinney line from the Wheat community of Roane County. James was a teacher at Roane College and Wheat High School for many years.
