JOHN
SILVEY AND BARBARA COOK
(probable son of Samuel Silvey, Sr.)
The
dates of birth and death are from headstones. We don’t know anything about
Barbara’s family, but there were several COOKs in the area, including a marriage
in 11 Apr 1819 Roane between Samuel Silvey and Sarah “Sally” Cook. I tend to
think this represents a second marriage for Samuel Senior, father of John. So,
we could have a stepmother and stepdaughter closely related. Sarah was born ca
1785 in NC, and Barbara says she was born in NC also.
A Jacob Cook was on the 1802 Roane Tax List. In 1805, no Jacob, but now George
and Peter Cook are listed.
John did not seem to live next door to his siblings and cousins, but probably
not far away. In 1860 he is in the 15th District, P. O. Welckers Mills, with his
younger children, and land value of $1000. Listed beside him is Sarah Silvey 77,
born NC, who is surely his step mother—widow of Samuel Sr.

John Henry Qualls (1853-1936) married Mary Catherine Silvey (1854-1932). In 1897 they bought a farm in East fork Valley near wheat; about a mile north of the bridge across East Fork of Poplar Creek, where Russell's Chapel was located. The farm was sold to Joe Hatfield, from the Norris area, in 1933.
John and Mary Qualls had a son, Bert Augustus Qualls. They reared two other children--Mrs. Qualls' nephew, Fred Reed--as his mother (Dollie Silvey Reed--died when Fred was an infant, and the Qualls reared Henry Butler too. Bert Qualls (1889-1972) m Flora Courtney on 17 Jan 1915.

That James Silvey seems to be son of Wesley Silvey, son of John and Barbara Cook Silvey.

Note
from Della: Franc was a coal miner in Oliver Springs. When Sarah Catherine Silvey
[daughter] came to Indian Territory she traveled with "family". The only one I know by name was Will Silvey, her cousin. He was orphaned and raised by Westly and Sarah Jane. I found him on the 1880 Roane census. He died here in Hughes County.

Westly was a farmer, a postmaster, and a carpenter. I find him in the records making coffins. He was also active in the Union League of
America. (Lets Call It Wheat) Postmaster of Guenther, 1 1/2 miles west of wheat in the area of the mouth of East Fork of Popar Creek.
