POSSIBLE FAMILY OF SAMUEL SILVEY, SR. of Roane County, TN
This one is really difficult to even wildly speculate upon. He most surely had sons named John and William. At first I thought he would be father of Capt. Samuel Jr., but now believe that man is son of William Sr., and there is the possibility Samuel Sr. had a son named Samuel that did not linger in Roane (see below).
****
If Samuel Silvey is a part of the Prince Edward Co. VA family that we strongly suspect, then he must be the man who married Mary “Polly” GIBBONS 21 Apr 1793 in Prince Edward Co. VA, sur. Peter Gibbons, daughter of JOHN GIBBONS. Likely she died Bef. 1819. He married (2) Sarah “Sally” COOK 11 Apr 1819 in Roane Co. TN, Wm. Selbe sec. She was born abt. 1785 in NC. (Other researchers say an older Charles Selbe/Silvey was father of William, Samuel, and others.

Note young kids in older Charles household!!
This Samuel had 4 sons born between 1793 and 1810, and two daughters born between 1805 and 1810. (Later census records should indicate a birth in VA, when we can track these kids down.)
Prince Edward Co. VA
In 1813, PETER GIBBONS and his wife JANE [ Boatwright?] sold some land to SAMUEL SELBE in PE VA on Fallen/Falling Creek. I believe that Peter is probably the brother of Samuel's wife (see marriage notes ) as he also was surety for their wedding, the father being dead. However, no relationship is mentioned. In 1815 Samuel sells the exact same piece of land. No further entries of Samuel Selbe in deed book and he is not in Virginia in 1820.We might suspect that Samuel and his wife started a move to TN. Or, it is possible his wife died along about this time, because indications are he married again in 11 Apr 1819 Roane to Sarah Cook, with William Selbe as his Security.
Census: 1830 Roane 021/000/001-102/100/1 [60-70]
Samuel has 3 sons still at home and four daughters, presumably, and a wife younger than he. I believe this indicates a second wife. Who the children are is purely guesswork, based on marriage records. No estate records have been found. But by 1830 he surely had some married children—at least his William and his John.

Proposed children:
2. WILLIAM SILVEY was born Abt. 1794 in VA, and died Aft. 1860 in MO. He married MARTHA "PATSY" SILVEY 18 Dec 1817 in Roane Co. TN, daughter of William Silvey, Sr. and Frances Davis. She was born abt. 1800 in TN.
The best guess is that this is the son of Samuel Sr. and Polly Gibbons, their first child born soon after their marriage. Martha would have to be his first cousin, daughter of William Sr. This means that Samuel and family had arrived in Roane County, TN prior to December 1817. If they are the same couple who moved to Rhea County, TN, and then to Morgan Co. MO, then the 1850 census shows him born VA, and her born TN.

There does not seem to be a wife in 1840. This is troubling because if he is in 1850 MO, there is a wife, Martha, about his same age. Did he marry again?

Although the mystery man, William Riley, born ca 1837, would fit into the stick figures, one cannot imagine why he would be left behind when the family moved to MO, or if he went and then returned, why he would do that. BUT, we would expect this couple to name a child William.

2. SAMUEL SILVEY possibly born ca 1805 m Jane Tippett in 25 Feb 1822 Roane. This couple disappears from Roane records, but it fits nicely with Samuel Senior having a son named Samuel.
An Alsy Tippett m Adam Gardenhire, b abt 1792. Adam would be uncle to the Matthew Gardenhire, b abt 1799 who m. Nancy Elizabeth Silvey, ca 1799, 02 Jul 1826 Roane County. That couple was in 1830 census, but moved to Morgan Co. Illinois by 1850, according to this web site:
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=REG&db=:1661038&id=I0921
Some researchers say Andrew Gardenhire, b ca 1815, m. Mahala Butler. The Gardenhire, Tippett and Butler families need more research. I think Nancy Elizabeth was daughter of William Sr.

The 1850 Roane census shows her as age 40, born VA. I need some more daughters for Samuel Sr. so am placing her here until we get more clues. If date and place of birth is correct, she has to belong to Sam Sr. She COULD be the older female living with William and Martha in 1830.

This is the direct ancestor of Pat McD. I am not sure of his date of birth, so he could be son of either wife. I think he was born prior to 1819, so have him with Samuel's first wife. But I am not at all confident he is a son of Samuel Sr.

Sadly for me, in 1840 Samuel Silvey, Sr. has just one son in his household. It has to be either Thomas or Anderson, because both were unmarried in 1840. But, court records indicate that Anderson Silvey had a brother, John Silvey, so I’m giving Anderson the spot. I am also speculating that Joyce Howard’s father was Asa Howard, and that she is related to other Howards who m. Silveys, but I cannot prove it.

Now this one is another puzzle! In 1860, the census-taker makes the note that three of their children are "Idiot", and writes on the side of the page "parents are first cousins."!!!
I can't figure out how that would be. Some food for thought:
In 1840 Roane, page 23, Samuel Silvey (Sr) is listed beside Asa Howard. Asa has some older daughters in his household. Anderson and Joyce name a son Oliver Aca/Asa. First son is named Samuel, but they also have a William [of course!]
In 1850 Roane, Asa Howard has in his household, Christopher Howard 17. I believe this could be the man who married Elizabeth Nelson, daughter of John E. Nelson, and sister to the two other Nelson women who married Silvey men. I've tried to find details of the Howard family, but no luck yet.
A JOSEPH SILVEY married Priscilla Butler in 1839 Roane. I don't find them in the 1840 census, He must fit in one of these families, and it looks like we have an extra slot in Sam's family. Guess he moved on somewhere else with new bride. But we need another son for the 1810 Prince Edward Census, so Joe gets my vote, even though I don’t know his age.
Can't figure out where Priscilla fits with old Butler family, if at all.
Alexis found this:

So for the 4 sons born before 1810 census, I am speculating they were William, John and Samuel (m.Tippett). For the fourth one to fit, Joseph would have to be born before 1810 but marry later than usual. OR, there may be another son that is totally lost in the shuffle.
I don’t have enough daughters either. In 1810 there are two. But in 1830, there are four young females.
