THE TWO WILLIAM SILVEYS (Junior) of Roane and Rhea Counties, TN
This is toughie! Need help!
It would seem that both Samuel Silvey Sr. and William Silvey Sr. named one of their older sons, William.
Roane County marriages:
William Silvey m Patsy Silvey = 12/18/1817
William Silvey m Betsy Howard, (security Sam Silvey) = 10/8/1818
[Charles Silvey m Lelitia/Lutitia Howard about 1825, no records found, relationship to Betsy unknown, if any. Charles son of William, Sr.] These two Howard women are likely close kin--perhaps sisters?
Roane County Tax Lists:
In 1823, Capt. Silvey’s Company, there is William Silvey, William Silvey, Sr. as well as Saml. Silvey and John Silvey. In Capt. Glass’ Co. is another William Silvey. That is the only year I find three Williams listed, so it is probable one of them moved to Rhea county about that time, and is there in 1830 and 1840 census.

1840 Rhea Co. William Sylva 121/100/1-002/12
Both men are in the same age bracket, but wife of Rhea County man is a bit older. If he has a daughter in the 20-30 age bracket, and wife in 30-40 age bracket, wife must have been quite young when married. Could be a sister, or sister-in-law??? Or error on part of the census-taker??
Roane County Wm. has 2 young sons born 1825-1830, 1820-1825, and five daughters. Oldest is born 1815-1820
Rhea County Wm has two sons, oldest born 1815-1820. And three young daughters, plus older daughter? The 1840 census adds 3 more sons, and “stick figures” look okay, but females are puzzling. I have no answer, or even good guess as what is going on there.
[Perhaps the Anna Silvey who m. John Goad in 24 Jun 1838 Rhea County is an older daughter? I have not looked for them on a later census. Goad researchers say this John Goad is in Monroe Co. KY in 1850, with no wife and one child, listed near the Silvey folks. ]

From court records, we learn that a William Silvey has died in Roane County ca 1836. Since William Silvey Senior is still kicking in 1840, we must presume it is the younger William. Whether wife is deceased or not is unknown.
From other researchers we learn that some orphaned Silvey children (born in Roane) move to KY. Norman Silvey sent this:

Notes from Norman Silvey norbarsilv@msn.com
Robert Hamilton (1831) had 2 sisters, one of whom was Adeline, 1 brother--Alexander. All lived in Monroe County, KY. Robert Hamilton was Tax Assr. Of Monroe County, reared sister's children: Sarah Melissa b 1849, Jesse Silvey b 1853, Nan b 1856.
Robert Hamilton Silvey lists his birthplace as Roane Co. (Roann, Tenn.) when he filed for marriage in 1859 vital statistics, Monroe Co., Ky. 1852-1861
It does appear that his mother was one of the Howard women (his brother named Alexander and RHS named his youngest son Preston Howard).
He arrived in Monroe Co., Ky. in 1840 as part of the household of John and Anne Hibbitt. John is 25 yrs. old with one male 10-15. RHS probably reported his age as 10 in 1840 since in 1850 census he reports his age as 20 living with his brother, Alexander. The Hibbitts came from Jackson Co., TN which in 1840 was adjacent to Monroe Co., Ky.
The travel pattern took Alex, Adeline and Robt. from Roane Co. to Monroe Co., Ky. When they left and with whom is unknown. How RHS encountered the Hibbitts is unknown. Jackson Co. along the Ky. border ceded part of itself to the creation of Clay Co. in 1870.
The 1830 Roane Co. census shows the following children at home:(1) male under 5 (Johnson is 3 )(1) male 5-10 (Alexander is 7 )(2) females under 5 (Adeline is 3 ) (?)(2) females 5-10 (Amanda is 6 ) (?)(1) female 10-15 (?)Since William and Betsy were married in Oct. 1818 it is logical that the unknown female 10-15 in 1830 was their first child born 1819-1820 (perhaps named after Betsy's mother or grandmother Elizabeth (?). The second unknown daughter could have been born in 1821-1822. Then Alexander in 1823 provided the first opportunity to apply the name of Betsy's father to the family. The third unknown daughter would have been born abt. 1829-1830. Then in Oct. 1831 Robert Hamilton Silvey was born. Why and how these Silvey kids of William and Betsy got to Monroe Co.,Ky. remains a mystery.Norm

I don’t have many Rhea County or Missouri reference materials, so will have to let others figure this one out. As a side note, I would expect this man to have a son named William. Since he seems to name his first son Samuel, that is a bit bothersome. We have only accounted for 4 of the 5 sons shown in 1840, so maybe there’s another William floating around somewhere?
