The Bogart Family of Roane County, TN And Their Ancestors
Prepared by Leota Bennett E-mail: rabit@preferred.com March 4, 2003
Abraham Bogart born April 9, 1777 died after the 1850 Federal Census was probably the first Bogart to arrive in Roane County. Abraham was born at Berkeley, Virginia. Since the Civil War division of Virginia, Berkeley is in West Virginia. He was the son of Hendrick (later Henry) Bogart born April 27, 1746, Lebanon, Hunterdon, New Jersey and Elizabeth Range born at Somerset, New Jersey. They were married in Somerset County, New Jersey. By the late 1780’s Hendrick and his family with his father and an uncle Samuel Bogart had moved to the Watauga Settlement in present day Carter and Washington County, TN. Several other families moved about the same time, including members of his mother’s family, Coon, Range, Hammers, etc.
As a young man, Abraham Bogart, lived briefly in Southwest Virginia and is found on a 1790 census in that area. After his return to Tennessee, he married Elizabeth Duncan April 20, 1799 at Washington County, TN. She was the daughter of Charles Duncan and his wife, Susannah / Luranah. The marriage record and Charles Duncan’s will are listed on the Washington County, TN web link found at the end of this article. About 1804, Abraham brought his wife and at least three of their nine children to the Roane, TN area. The other children five or six children were born after their move to Roane County. Elizabeth Bogart died about 1810-1811.
Abraham Bogart lived in the section of Roane County that later became Loudon County in 1870. He was a prosperous farmer. Bogart Island is in the middle of the Tennessee River at Matlock Bend. On the Tennessee River web site Bogart Island can be found just below where Loudon and Roane Counties meet at Matlock Bend.
Tennessee River Overview:
After the death of his wife, Elizabeth Duncan, Abraham Bogart married second, Jane or Jean Looney Preston on Jan 22, 1812. She was the widow of George W. Preston. After Abraham and Jane/Jean married they had three daughters and a son.
Jane/Jean Looney was born in Augusta County, VA about 1771. Her name is found as Jane or Jean in some records. She died about 1858 at Roane County, TN. She first married about 1787 in Virginia her to her first husband, George W. Preston born about 1769 in Virginia. They migrated to Knox County, TN. They had about eight children. George W. Preston was a very politically involved person in his time. He is reported to be one of the men who was instrumental in influencing the negotiators of the Treaty with the Cherokee that made Kingston Capitol of Tennessee and later instrumental in the formation of Roane County itself. He was appointed to serve as one of the first Commissioners of Roane County. He died about 1808.
The large Abraham Bogart family in the Roane County grew and prospered. Some of the later generations followed their neighbors and migrated westward.
My ancestor, Henry Madison Bogart continued to live in the same area as his parents. He married first, Mary Ann Woody on August 22, 1825 at Roane County, TN. She was born February 19, 1808 and died June 1850. They had 13 children. Second he married Lucinda Burnett on February 01, 1855. Henry Madison Bogart died between 1873 and 1879 when his will was probated in Loudon County, TN.
Henry Madison Bogart attended Cave Creek Church where he and several members of the church were removed from the church membership for supporting the Civil War effort. The church did not approve of any members participating in the war in any way. Henry had at least one son-in-law, John H. Wilson, who fought with the U.S. 5th Calvary. By giving aid to him or his family it was interpreted as giving aid to the cause. John H. Wilson and his wife, Lucinda Bogart were also dismissed. Later, John H. Wilson husband of Lucinda Bogart became the third Elder of Poplar Springs Primitive Baptist Church. The church records were destroyed in a fire, however some records were found in other places to establish his service. He is buried at the Poplar Springs Church on the hill beside the Church.
Some of the descendants of Abraham Bogart:
The ancestors of Abraham Bogart migrated from Holland to the new world in the mid 1600’s. They were active in the Dutch church in America. The name appears with several spellings including Bogart, Bogaert, Bogard, Bogeert, Bogardus, Bogar, all a variation of the family name Boogaertman. The early documents area complicated to study because of the language barrier. An example of the term variance: In early Holland or Dutch records the word domine sometimes precedes the person’s name. Domine is a title for minister.
The migration often passed through the coastal Fort of New Amsterdam had begun by the mid to late 1600’s. Some of the family went to Flatbush, Albany, Kingston, Marbletown, and Ulster in New York. From there some of the family migrated to Hunterton and Somerset Counties in New Jersey. From there some of the families migrated into Berkeley, Virginia (now West Virginia), from here some went to Kentucky and Ohio, while others came down to the Watauga Settlement of Carter/Washington County, TN by the late 1780’s.
Other families associated by marriage with the early Tennessee Bogart family include, Coon/Koon, Range, Hammer, Pugh, Longmire, Duncan, etc. Peter Range of Washington County, TN was a brother to Elizabeth Range, mother of Abraham Bogart. He built the oldest frame house that is still standing in Washington County, TN today. There is a Range family cemetery in the back yard. Descendants of these early Bogart and associated families still live in the Carter/Washington County TN area.
