SARAH "SALLY" BRASHEARS & JOHN B. RICE

From Charles Brashear

Sarah "Sally" Brashears, b. 16 Oct 1788, d. 23 May 1874, d/o Isaac Brashears, s/o Robert Samuel Brashears; m. 12 Dec 1815, Roane Co, TN (Marriage Book 1, p.143), John B. Rice, b. 1785, TN, d. 5 Dec 1872, whose parentage has not yet been determined. The Bible record of John B. and Sarah Rice is extant; in possession of Abigail (Rice) Hyde, of Ridgely, TN.

In the very earliest days of the westward movement, c1768, a Henry Rice, b. c1717, d. 1818 (101 years old); m.1. _____; m.2. Esther _____, came down the Holston River into Cherokee territory and founded a trading post called Rice’s Station, in present-day Hawkins Co. Henry had a very large family. He and his sons are said to have fought the Indians during the Revolutionary War.

Among his sons was one James Rice, whose descendants are well-documented. One of the descendants wrote a very reliable book on that branch of the Rice family. (I don’t know the name of it at the moment.)

Another son was William Rice, (s/o Henry Rice) d. 1831, Wilson Co, TN; m. in Caswell Co, NC, Esther Chounanunty

Another possible son was John Rice, believed to be the father (no documentation) of Stephen Rice (who m Phoebe Brashear, dau of Robert Samuel Brashear), John B. Rice, and Polly (Rice) Brashears (Mrs. Zaza Brashears Jr--nephew of Robert Samuel Brashear)

Henry Rice, b. 1717, lived at least in his early years on "Big Sandy River" in VA, according to Melvin Little’s book, "Henry Rice, Tennessee’s Pioneer Gristmiller and His Twelve Children". Matthew Rice, d. 1775, s/o Thomas and Marcey Rice, of Hanover County, VA, and his family lived on the waters of the Sandy River in Prince Edward County, VA, according to Paul Rice’s book, "Rice Family. Ancestors and Descendants of Early Jackson County, N.C."

John B. Rice served in the War of 1812, in Capt William Neilson’s Company of militia Infantry, East Tennessee Volunteers. He joined 30 Sep 1813, at a rate of $8.00 per month. His wife-to-be’s brother, Walter Brashears, was in the same company. The two men were life-long friends. Later, in Decatur Co, TN, John B. Rice helped Elizabeth (Roberts) Brashears, widow of Walter, to secure her bounty land grants, based on Walter’s service.

John B. Rice and Sarah Brashears lived their early married life in Roane Co, TN, where all of their children were born. In 1830, they were sending their two oldest children, Eliza Jane and Isaac Columbus, to a subscription school run by Master John C. Harvy. For each child, they paid 75 cents per month tuition for twelve months, beginning Jan 4, ¼ in corn, ¼ in pork, ¼ in cotton, and the balance due either in wheat or linen, all delivered to Mr. Harvy’s home.

Between 1831 and 1835, John and Sarah Rice moved to Perry Co, TN, (area now Decatur Co) and lived in the area near Scotts Hill. They bought 100 acres of land in Perry Co. on 19 Jan 1836, 169 acres in Decatur Co on 27 Ang 1846, and 346 acres in Decatur Co on 4 Sep 1846, adjoining their other property. By 1860, John and Sarah owned over 1000 acres of land and owned 8 slaves.

In their family Bible: "John B. Rice deceased December Thursday morning at 2 o’clock the 5 day, aged 87 years, 2 months and 3 days."

"Sarah Rice deceased May, Saturday night at 10 o’clock, 23 day, 1874, aged 85 years 7 months & 7 days."

"Difference in ther deathes... one year five month & eighteen days."
