From: "Roane Ramblings", published by the Roane County Genealogical Society, Vol. 14, No. 2, Summer 1998 submitted by Wanda Alexander, Appleton, MO.
Robert Gilliland was probably the eldest son of John, (1735-1798 in what is now Cocke Co, TN), and Elizabeth (Young) Gilliland. Both John and his father-in-law were in the battle of Kings Mountain. There is a possibility that Robert could have been the son of a James Gilliland who came from Ireland as a soldier in the British Army with a brother, William. James also had a James and a David. Additional work is needed here.
Jane Gilliland married Gray Haggard from a well-known Roane family of Preachers, teachers, and lawyers.
