ELIZABETH BRASHEARS
and JEREMIAH SATTERFIELD

Information furnished by Charles Brashear, San Diego, CA

710. Elizabeth Brashears, b. c1778-79, probably in Tennessee, d. c1816, d/o Robert Samuel Brashears and Phoebe Nicks. Elizabeth is in RSB's Will, but not his Bible; however, legal documents, like the division of the estate of her mother's brother, Quinton Nicks, make it unquestionable that she is a daughter of RSB. She m. c1795, Jeremiah Satterfield, possibly (no proof) s/o James and Elizabeth Satterfield, who lived very near the Brashears settlement on George's Creek and the Saluda River in SC.

On 12 Nov 1799, James Satterfield sold, for $100.00, 167 acres originally granted 6 June 1791 to Stephen Rice, being on Brush Creek of Saluda River, and adjoining George Head, to Jonathan Synard, both of Pendleton Co, SC.

wit: James Hill, James Cooper, John Fenell, who swore by oath 15 Nov 1798 before Robert Brown JP, recd, 10 Mar 1801. (Pendleton Co, SC, Deeds, Bk F, p.145)

James's widow, Elizabeth Satterfield, sold the land on George's Creek, 10 Aug 1820: State of South Carolina, Pendleton District: Know all men by these presents that I, Elizabeth Satterfield of the same State and District, for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred dollars to me in hand paid by John Humphries of the same State and District, has bargained, sold, and by these presents do grant, bargain and sell unto the said Humphries, a tract or parcel of land whereon I now live, situated on George's Creek and District aforesaid in said district, waters of Saluda River, it being granted unto John Bryde by the letter patent under the hand of Thomas Pinkney the then Governor and dated the fifteenth of March, one thousand seven hundred and eighty-seven, and hath such shape and form and marks as a plat thereof directs to the original Grant annexed, containing one hundred acres be the same more or less, beginning on a Red Oak on Boyd's line, from then to Benson's pine, from thence to Boyd's corner, from thence to a Post oak corner, from [thence] on Gillaspie's line to a Red oak corner, from thence a straight line to the beginning corner, together with all and singular, with the exception of fifty acres more or less sold to John Nichols by James Satterfield Senior and one half acre round the grave-yard. The land sold Nichols is marked by a conditional line. I do bind myelf... (standard warranties, not copied) /s/ Elizabeth [X] Satterfield

In presence of James Hogan, William Barret. Proved by William Barret, 18 Oct 1820, recorded 6 Nov 1820

James and Elizabeth Satterfield probably came from Orange/ Caswell/ Person Co, NC. John and James Satterfield are there on the 1755 tax lists and begin appearing in land records about 1761. Betty Palmisano has copies of their deeds, all on Deep Creek and Richland Spring Creek, branches of Flatt River. James left after 1777; it is apparently him who shows up in Pendleton Dist, SC, about 1784.

Since Elizabeth Brashears was a young girl of 13 or 14 when RSB left Pendleton District, SC, she may have gone with the family to Roane Co, then returned, or she may have married very young. She m. c1795, Jeremiah Satterfield, we have assumed in Pendleton Dist, SC, where her first child was b. 1796. She died in Giles Co, TN, about 1816. She was the first listed in RSB's will, along with the children who were known dead: Philip and Peggy. Perhaps RSB knew that she was ill, was not expected to live, and so assumed that she would be dead by the time he was. Jeremiah Satterfield m.2. Mary "Polly" Brown in 1817; he is listed in the 1820 Census of Maury Co, TN, and the 1830 census of Hardin Co, TN; he died in Hardin Co, TN, in 1834. Some of Jeremiah Satterfield and Elizabeth Brashear's children moved on to central Arkansas, some to western Tennessee.
