From The Story of Oliver Springs, TN and Its People Vol IV by Snyder E. Roberts, page 51-52

"Elizabeth Butler, dau of RWS William Butler, Sr., was born 1768 and died after 1854 in Anderson County. She married (11/9/1785 in Bedford County, VA) Ancil Manley who was born 12/28/1763 in Fluvanna County, VA and died 6/22/1853 in Anderson County, TN and is buried on his old farm on Poplar Creek. He was a Revolutionary War pensioner. He enlisted June 18, 1780 under Captain Joseph Hardin, and again for another tour July 12, 1781 as a Private under Captain Richard Hapier and Colonel Taylor of VA. He was in the Battle of Camden. Ancil Manley, was of German ancestry.

Ancil Manley came to Anderson County in 1807 where be bought 200 acres (C, page 117) on Main Poplar Creek from his brother-in-law, Thomas Butler. William and Henry Butler and Caleb Manley were witnesses to the deed. Caleb has not been identified, but was probably a brother to Ancil. In 1828 (G, page 174) William Butler, Sr. deeded to his granddaughter, Elizabeth O. Manley, a Negro boy named Jacob. When Ancil died in 1853, his wife Elizabeth deeded (Q, p 382) to her son Ancil W. "for $1 and natural love and affection, all of my property that I may die possessed.………cattle, cash notes…….etc." In 1858, Ancil W. sold (R.page 305) to Jacob G. Carmichael of Roane "200 acres on Main Poplar Creek where Ancil Manley last lived and whereon said Ancil W. and his mother, Elizabeth, now live."

In the William Butler, Sr. Will, he mentions Elizabeth Manley, and gives her "my Negro women, Jane, Barbary, Cloe and Fan, and Negro boy Moses".

William does not name his son Jacob in his will, (who married Martha Manley). By other records Jacob is known to be a son, and Elizabeth to be the wife of Ancil Manley.

Ancil Manley and his wife Elizabeth had 10 children, and may have followed a custom practiced in some old countries of giving their new born baby a duplicate name of an earlier child of theirs that had died.
