CLARK FAMILY
THOMAS N. CLARK,
Kingston Commissioner

Source:  Roots of Roane County, TN by Snyder E. Roberts

This book devotes several pages to the Clark Family.  I have condensed it to mostly just the family members. PatMcD

THOMAS NORRIS CLARK was born May 5, 1763, probably in Scotland.  He came to America and may have lived with THOMAS NORRIS, a relative, or god-father.  The first documentation on Thomas N. Clark is his marriage in Fluvanna County, VA to SUSANNAH RANDOLPH PAYNE (1-24-1768 --10-17-1842) on June 11, 1788.  She was the daughter of WILLIAM PAYNE and his second wife MARY THOMPSON PAYNE.  She was a sister to Sarah "Sally" Payne, wife of MERRIWEATHER SMITH, who was also a Kingston City Commissioner in 1799.  Susan and Sally were first cousins to DOLLY PAYNE MADISON, the wife of President JAMES MADISON, as their fathers were brothers.  Thus, Thomas N. Clark had married into an old-line, well-to-do, highly respected Virginia family.

The carefully kept Bible records of the Thomas N. Clark family are of great importance in developing the family history.  In addition to the date of birth, the placeof birth is given for each of their twelve children, and the dates and places of death are given for each child.  The Clark Bible also contains the names and birth dates of slaves.

[The book describes several land records, the Clark Ferry and Inn, and has a portrait of Thomas N. Clark and Susan Payne Clark]
