LUTHER ALLEN CROSS served a short period as Recorder [City of Oliver Springs] from November of 1921 until February 23, 1922. He was the son of Millard F. Cross (1856-1916) and Matilda E. Long. Millard Cross was the son of Alfred Cross who was a former Sheriff of Anderson County, and Elizabeth Black Cross. Alfred Cross was the son of Britton Cross who was a Revolutionary War Soldier. William and Britton came to Anderson County, TN shortly after 1800. Luther A. had brothers: HARRY LEE CROSS ( m. Rhoda Butler), SAM LONG CROSS, and LAWRENCE CROSS; and sisters, GYPSY YERKES, VIRGIE SCANDLYN, all of whom were well known in the Oliver Springs community.
Luther Cross was reared on Poplar Creek. He probably attended local schools and old Roane College at Wheat. He later attended Carson-Newman College. Luther married DELIA WRIGHT, daughter of TOM WRIGHT on Poplar Creek. They had one son, SAM YOUNG CROSS who married GRACE COX. They both attended Oliver Springs School, and Sam Y. later graduated from the University of TN, and worked for TVA until his retirement.
Luther probably tried farming in his early years, but later lived in Oliver Springs and was engaged in several occupations. He operated the first or one of the first moving picture shows in Oliver Springs in the old NEIL SIMMONS Store building. He also at one time operated a hotel, or boarding house. Luther was in the contracting business, and was one of the contractors on the old Oliver Springs--Coalfield road.
Luther Cross is best remembered as Postmaster at Oliver Springs. He received his appointment July 23, 1915 and served during the World War I period until November 19, 1921. His wife, Delia, served as Postal Clerk.
Luther and Delia are buried in the Oliver Springs Cemetery.
