CROW/CROWE Family of Roane County, TN
From Roots of Roane County, TN, by Snyder E. Roberts, pg 153
The Crow family intermarried with several families in the Emory River area. The Roane public records are vague concerning the Crow families. Local historian Captain W. E. McElwee does not give the source of his information, but writes on the Emory River group thusly:
"Robert Crow, an ancestor of the Crow families on Emory River, was a private in Capt. Crockett's Company in the 6th VA Regiment, and he was at Valley Forge, White Plains, and Monmouth. His honorable discharge stated 'for brave and meritorious conduct in arresting three deserters.' Robert Crow, Thomas Crumbliss, and Samuel Walker settled in Roane in 1811."
The 1812 Enumeration List for Capt. Matlock & Capt. Walker's company shows Robert Crowe and James Crowe.
From Roane County Roots, Winter 1997, Bailey Publishing, pg 22 - Tidbits from Loose Papers: State of TN, Roane County, Circuit Court March Term 1834. Personally appeared Wm. Crow & Gilbert Christian in open court and made oath that Robert Crow late a pension of the revolutionary war of said county departed this life on the 2nd day of February 1834, and that Polly Crow is his widow & relict. Able Crow was born about 1765 and married Sarah ___. His name is hardly mentioned in Roane Records, but the location of Abel (or Abraham) Crow's homeplace is revealed in a State of TN grant issued to James Buckhannon in 1825 for use in maintaining an iron works. The bounds of Buckhannon's 100-acre grant on the waters of Big Emory River "touch Abraham Crow's line near a branch at the foot of Walden's Ridge, to Solomon Geron's line, to a corner of Willie Blount's tract, with the line of Willis Crow, and M. Wilson."
A Roane County Circuit Court suit dated March 18, 1833 states that Abel Crow was dead, and names his children, but not necessarily in order of birth. Abel and Sarah Crow's children were listed as follows:
- Willis Crow* m (1819) Nancy Tedder
- William Crow m (1819) Patsy Bowers. They lived in McMinn Co.

Willis Crow, son of Abel Crow, was born 1789 in NC. He married (1819) Nancy Tedder (1787 NC), the daughter of Thomas Tedder. A survey (J, p.107) in 1843 shows that Willis Crow owned 245 acres on the north side of Emory River which adjoined the Blount 5000-acre tract, and Walden Ridge. Willis had died by April of 1863 because (Book B2, p237) gives dates to settle his estate and names his heirs as follows.
