Descendants of James Davis

This material is from handwritten notes made by Snyder E. Roberts, dated February 1988.  It was a work in progress before he suffered a stroke in 1989.  Perhaps it will provide clues for someone.  Pat McD

There is a website on the family of Jonathan Davis at http://members.aol.com/Lizziekid/Martin/jondavis.htm

1 James DAVIS b: 28 Jul 1789 VA d: 18 Jun 1876 in Roane Census 1850: #1494
+Nancy WOODS d: 31 May 1827 m: 24 Dec 1812

James Davis may be found in 1809 Roane County records, and purchased 50 acres from Alexander Howard in 1815 which was located on Poplar Creek.   James was PROBABLY the son of Jonathan Davis, who was also in the 1809 record and lived nearby James until after 1830.

Charles Davis  LowLoad@aol.com adds that Jonathan Davis died 14 Jul 1831 in Roane County, TN, according to pension application of his widow, Elizabeth.  A son James Davis is identified in the pension application, and William and John Davis.

James Davis was married twice, and had children by both wives.  To date, comparatively little is known of these children with the exception of Emily Angeline Davis (Phillips) and her brother, James Richard Davis.  The main focus of this study has been on the family of James Richard Davis, which has been fairly well-documented, thanks to the James Davis (1789) Bible now in the possession of Mrs. Mildred Cox Foster of Harriman.  Errors should be corrected as new information is uncovered, and added to these preliminary work sheets.   Children:
