The first Galbraith families in the area settled in 1801 on the Brush Fork of Poplar Creek adjoining the northeast line of the McClung survey. The Anderson County 1802 Tax List contains the name of Alexander Galbraith with 300 acres, and his brother, James Galbraith with 880 acres. They had bought the land from John Hackett (Book A, p 56) who was probably acting as an agent for Charles McClung. It is doubtful that James actually lived in Anderson County. In any event, he sold 212 acres to his brother, Samuel Galbraith, in 1804, and another tract of 521 acres (Book F, p 215) to the same brother which was registered in 1809. In 1810, Samuel bought an additional 42 acres (D, p. 141) from Michael Hossler which was located on Big Poplar near the county line. It may have included a mill.
The Galbraiths were among the most prolific reproducers in the area, and the branches of their family tree have reached out and become interwoven through marriages with numerous old line families in this and surrounding areas. Only a brief outline of the family can be covered within the scope of this article, but those interested in a comprehensive genealogical study should refer to the book "Galbraith Clan and Their Descendants" by Mrs. James Paul Galbraith.
The Galbraith story starts with Alexander Galbraith I who may have been born in Scotland about 1720 and died in 1792 in Virginia. He had arrived in Bucks County, PA before 1747 and married Agnes Miller about 1747-8. Alex was a Revolutionary War soldier. Alexander and Agnes were the parents of nine children, only three of whom were involved in the Poplar Creek settlement, namely: James Galbraith (1761), Samuel Gaston Galbraith (1763) and Alexander Galbraith II (1747). Of these three sons, only the latter one will be discussed.

LEXANDER2 GALBRAITH II (ALEXANDER1) was born 1749 in Bucks Co. PA, and died at the home of his son, William,1835 in Wheat, Roane Co. TN. He married ROSANNAH LYLE [Lile?] 1778. She was born 1756, and died 1817.Notes for A
LEXANDER GALBRAITH II:As noted above, Alex and Rosannah came to Poplar Creek, Anderson County, in 1801. Little is known of these very early days. It is likely he had a good education and he provided a good education for his children. One little item of information regarding Alexander that creeps into the story in an unusual manner may require some explanation:
Roane County Survey Books show, "In 1811, surveyed for Reuben Williams, 14 acres on the waters of Poplar Creek and Pyles Turnpike, opposite Alexander Galbraith's still house." First, Reuben Williams was the son-in-law of Thomas A. Butler, and Pyles turnpike ran roughly the same route as the present Oliver Springs-Oak Ridge 4-lane highway. The still house doesn't mean that Alex was an old "meanie", nor a moonshiner. The operation of a still at that point in time was perfectly legal, and in fact, it was customary for the better farmers west of the mountains to reduce the bulk of their corn and other grain crops by converting them to liquid form which greatly facilitated the transportation of their product across the mountains to thirsty and ready markets along the coast.

OBERT3 GALBRAITH (ALEXANDER2, ALEXANDER1) was born 1778, and died 1841 in Anderson Co. TN.Notes for R
OBERT GALBRAITH:Robert Galbraith allegedly married Ann Oliver, the daughter of Richard Oliver, but this is an error because Richard Oliver was not born until 1800, and all of his daughters' husbands are known. Robert Galbraith was evidently an extensive farmer.

LEXANDER GALBRAITH III:Alexander Lyle "Big Lyle" Galbraith married Mary Polly Gallaher, daughter of James Gallaher, a well-to-do farmer who lived on Poplar Creek near the New Fairview Baptist Church. "Big Llyle" served as a Sergeant in Captain Lunsford Oliver's Company in the War of 1812. He served as the High Sheriff of Anderson County for the years 1836-7. "Big Lyle" was well-known throughout the area, and was a man of considerable influence. He was well-educated and a master at penmanship. His will is on record in Anderson County, dated April 1, 1869. By his will, he partitioned his estate among his several children and heirs.
