GALLAHER James, Sr. b. ca 1730 d. 1 JAN 1792

Son of John & Margaret O'GALLAHER. Born in County Donegal, Ireland. Married 1st Tobrina WILLIAMS, probably in Ireland. Married 2nd Sarah MILLER.

Emigrated to Pennsylvania ca 1758. Earliest record in America is a 1766 record of James purchasing 222.5 acres in Fermanagh Township, near Ft. Mifflin (now Mifflin Station), PA on the north side of the Juniatta River in Cumberland (now Juniatta) Co. James and wife Sarah sold their land in Fermanagh Township on 1 SEP 1780 to David MILLER for 12,000 pounds of Pennsylvania money and moved to Tennessee (Washington District, NC), settling on the Nolichucky River near the mouth of Limestone Creek, about 5 miles below Jonesboro, TN ca 1781/1783. Buried near Jonesboro, TN. James' estate was advertised for sale on 25 JUL 1795, 400 acres, a slave, and some stock to be sold NOV 10 next. Part of his property is now in the Davy CROCKETT Birthplace (b. 1786) State Park. The "Snapp Inn" now occupies the homesite, in the house constructed soon after James' death. His will, dated 22 SEP 1791, probated FEB 1792, is on record in Jonesboro, Washington County, TN. It names his wife Sarah and the following sons:

1. George GALLAHER, SR b. 14 MAR 1762 d. 12 APR 1837 m. Sarah OATS b. 25 NOV 1770 d. 13 MAR 1821 (see below)

2. Thomas GALLAHER b. 19 FEB 1764 in Cumberland County, PA m. in 1787 in Washington County, TN to Sarah GREEN b. 6 JUL 1769 in Pennsylvania. Thomas purchased 300A on Poplar Creek in what is now Roane Co., TN from Stockley DONELSON on 24 NOV 1798. Purchased 160A on Poplar Creek from Charles MCCLUNG on 15 JAN 1800. Thomas was elected Major of the East Tennessee Militia. Ran a gristmill on East Fork Poplar Creek. His title to the land on Poplar Creek was faulty and he hired Andrew JACKSON to clear the title. He paid JACKSON with a horse and the property was known thereafter as the "Horse Farm". Andrew JACKSON visited often on his trips between Knoxville and Nashville. Thomas was summoned for jury duty on 22 DEC 1801 on the first Roane Co., TN court. Thomas and Sarah had 12 children as follows:

Three sons became Presbyterian ministers: Rev. James Gallaher of St. Charles, MO was chaplain to the US House of Representatives in the 1850's and the author of several books; Rev. William G. Gallaher, a resident of Jacksonville, FL, and Rev. Allen G. Gallaher of MO.

3. James GALLAHER, Jr b. ca 1766 PA d. SEP 1834 in Morgan County, TN. Commissioned by Gov. John SEVIER as a Lieutenant in the Blount County Regulars on 10 OCT 1796. Cast deciding vote for Andrew JACKSON for Major-General of the State militia in 1802 against John SEVIER. Justice of the Peace in Roane County. James purchased 640A on Poplar Creek in what is now Roane Co., TN from Stockley DONELSON, et al on 24 NOV 1798. Same tract is registered in Roane Co., TN in 1803. James was summoned for jury duty on 22 DEC 1801 on the first Roane Co., TN court.

The name of James Jr.'s first wife is unknown, but they had ten children. Their daughters married wealthy and prominent men. The first wife died prior to 1820 because James Gallaher married, secondly (1820), Jane WILEY , daughter of Alexander Wiley of Kingston. After James, Jr. died in September of 1834, the settlement of his valuable estate resulted in lengthy litigation in the Chancery Court at Kingston. The case styled "Jane Gallaher vs Collins Roberts et al" names the ten children by the first wife and their places of residence in 1839:

  1. Mary Gallaher m (1810) Alexander GALBRAITH and lived at Oliver Springs in Anderson County
  2. James A. Gallaher was in Johnston County, MO.
  3. Sarah Gallaher married Collins ROBERTS and lived at Robertsville in Anderson County (now Oak Ridge)
  4. Thomas C. Gallaher lived in Johnston County, Mo.
  5. Jane Gallaher married Willis CENTER and lived in Roane.
  6. George Gallaher lived in Johnston County, MO.
  7. Nancy Gallaher married Francis CENTER and lived in Roane.
  8. Elizabeth Gallaher who had married and divorced John OLIVER by a Legislative Special Act, had died in Smith County, TN, leaving a daughter Sally who married Jonathan BUTLER and removed to Johnston County, MO.
  9. William B. Gallaher lived in Morgan County, TN
  10. Lucinda married Howard COUNCIL who died in Murry County, GA, leaving Lucinda with 3 minor children.

At James Gallaher, Jr.'s death, Jane was left with four minor children: Emily, Abiah, Charles M., David A. Jane and the children were living in Roane in 1850.

Family lived in Blount Co., TN till 1796. George and Sarah are both buried at Hickory Creek (now Mt. Pleasant) Baptist Cemetery, in west Knox Co., TN. The inscription on his stone reads "Our father has gone to a mansion of rest from a region of sorrow and pain. To the glorious land by the deity blest where he never can suffer again." Witnessed a deed from Charles MCCLUNG to his brother for 640 acres on both sides of Poplar Creek in Roane Co., TN on 17 APR 1802. Sold 200A on the Clinch River to William GALLAHER on 13 DEC 1834. Sold a slave to William GALLAHER on 28 NOV 1836. Sold a slave to Sarah Reed HARDIN on 24 SEP 1834. His farm is known today as Gallaher Bend in Knox County, TN.

Permelia WILLIAMS b. 21 APR 1806 d. 8 JUN 1838 bur. at AEC No. 12, m. 2nd 26 MAR 1839 Roane Co. Elizabeth WILLIAMS b. 16 NOV 1817 d. 21 JUL 1884 bur. at AEC No. 12. Thomas was a postmaster. Thomas bought the "Horse Farm" in East fork Valley from his uncle Thomas Gallaher.

Both buried at GALLAHER-WELCKER Cemetery (AEC No. 1). George GALLAHER bought a slave from Mary KING on 28 NOV 1836 in Knox Co., TN. He bought 50A on the Clinch River from Amos HARDIN on 30 MAR 1833. He purchased a tract on "Richards Creek" from his father on 13 DEC 1834. George Jr. bought the Welckers' home, "Laurel Banks" and his descendants retained possession of this home tract until it was taken by the government in the Oak Ridge Project.

12. William G. GALLAHER b. 22 MAY 1812 d. 19 NOV 1893 m. Mary Ellen "Polly" KING b. 1819 d. 3 JAN 1887 (dau. of Rev. Jeremiah & Mary Freeman KING). Both bur. at Marietta Cumberland Presbyterian Church, west Knox Co., TN. Bought 200A on the Clinch River from his father on 13 DEC 1834. Bought a slave from his father on 28 NOV 1836.

13. Melinda Houston GALLAHER b. 30 JUN 1815 m. 12 JUL 1832 Knox Co., TN William C. FRAZIER, went to IL.

The will of George GALLAHER dated 9 MAR 1837 and probated MAY 1837 in Knox Co., TN, Will Book 6, pg 103 is paraphrased as follows:

Provisions: 1st I give myself both soul & body to God. 2nd I appoint my two sons Thomas and George executors. 3rd my son William is to carry on my farm & business until the present crop be made... make a sale of the crop and stock... $580.92 in notes which is to be collected... 4th to my daughter Rebecah TAYLOR $800... to my son James $1000 for which he has given receipt... to my son David $1000 of which he has received $614.~... to my daughter Nancy Stewart deceased her two sons $300 apiece... to my son Thomas $1000 with what he has received which amounts to $200... now I give him two Negroes, Primus a slave for life aged about 11 or 12 years at $450 and the other named Jude about 4 years old at $250 which amounts to $700 and the $200 before making $900... therefore he be paid $100... to my daughter Polly $800 counting what she has received which is to the amount $622.93... pay her the sum of $128.00... to my daughter Elizabeth MOUNGER $300... to my daughter Peggy SMITH $800 with what she has received which is $265... and give he two Negroes Nannd Tom(?) at $400 Sal at $300. Therefore her husband Alexander SMITH is to pay the executors $165... to my daughter Sarah $800 with what she has received which is to the amount of $295.25 then there is coming to her $504.75... and give to her two Negroes that is Lun and her child Malinda at $600. Therefore John G. HARDIN (her husband) is to pay the executors $95, the $95 is what is over the $800... to my son George $1000 and he has given his receipt for the same. Then I will Ben and David slaves for life by him paying $1000 to the other heirs... Also I have given... my son William $1000 and he has given his receipt for it... Therefore I will and give him a Negro boy named Wash slave for life at $500 to be paid my executors... to my daughter Balinda FRAZIER $800 with what she has had which is $650, therefore she is to get $150... I will also... to make an equal divide of the money that will be overpaying of the portions as I have described them... signed George GALLAHER, witnesses: Amos HARDIN, John JONES, Edward H. MOUNGER

Report of Brashear Roberts, Comm. for the Sale of the boy, John, as to the payment of the purchaser money, filed 5th June 1838. A. Green, clk

To the Worshipful County Court of Roane County the undersigned who was approved at the October Session, 1835 of said Court Special Compensation to Sell the Negro man Slave John belonging to the widow and heir of John S. Patterson decd, begs now to report to your that George Gallaher the purchaser of said Negro man John has fully paid and discharged his notes mentioned and ..... in my report made to your worshipful Court at November Session 1837, and recommend that a decree to be made divesting the title of said Negro slave Out of said widow and heirs and casting the Same in the purchaser, the Said George Gallaher. Given under my hand this 5th day of June 1838. Brashear Roberts, Commissioner [This would not be George, Sr., of course.]
