Pauline Halburnt Roberts joined the D.A.R. as a descendant of this patriot. Here is the line she submitted:

Pauline Halburnt Roberts was the daughter of:

Henry Landrum Halburnt and Docia Paralee Ruffner, the said Docia Paralee Ruffner Halburnt was the child of

Peter Ruffner b 1839 Switzerland and Nancy Elizabeth Childs b 1845. The said Nancy Elizabeth Childs was child of

Henry Childs b 1797 Anderson Co. TN and Nancy Garner b abt 1803 Anderson Co. TN. Daughter of

John Garner b 2/6/1776 NC and Rachel Henry b 6/26/1780 NC. Son of

John Fushee Garner b 12/25/1749 at Prince Wm. Co., VA, died Blount Co. TN, and Nancy Whittle b 1752 NC.

The CHILDS/CHILES and GARNER families have been traced and documented by many other researchers. I will list here the people I know about in the general Roane County, TN area. Garner-Keen Families of Northern Neck Virginia by Ruth Ritchie and Sudie Rucker Wood, 1952, is a very good source for the Garner family.

Page 168-9 of the Garner-Keene book: "John Garner, born February 6, 1776 in NC, married Rachel Henry in Blount Co., TN, October 17,1798. Three of John F. Garner's children married Henrys, all offspring of James Henry, Sr., a Rev. War soldier. A descendant of John Garner said that they were cousins of Patrick Henry. John Garner moved to Anderson County, TN, where he is said to have become a prosperous and respected farmer. He owned 372 acres of Clinch River bottom land and Copper Ridge timber land and 23 slaves. For four years he was Register of Deeds. He died there about 1855, as his will was probated in February, 1855. His executors were his sons, Pleasant H. Garner and Hugh Garner. A descendant has stated that John Garner had fourteen children, five sons and nine daughters."
