George Davis, abt 1774-aft 1850
+Anne (Anny) (probably Delany), abt 1780-aft 1850

 If maiden name is DELANY they married Mar 5, 1799 in Greene Co, TN.  George and Anny are on the Roane County census for 1830, 1840 and 1850.  Both are deceased prior to 1860.

            1.  William Davis, abt 1808-late 1850.  Never married.  Will on file in Roane Co, TN.  His will documents his parents, brothers and sisters.

            1.  John Davis, abt 1803-   Most probable marriage is to Nancy Ginkins (Jenkins) in 1824.  But spouse could be either Jane Ryan (1829) or Francis Duncan (1825).  See Affidavit below:

                        Note:  Both John and James were alive in 1850 when William's will was written but neither appear to be in Roane Co.

 Note:  the last three were still living with their parents in 1850 and were living together in 1860 in Roane Co, TN.  Probably never married.)


Snyder E. Roberts found this in the Old Records Room of Roane Courthouse, and abstracted it in 1987:

State of Illinois, County of Clay

William Davis being duly sworn according to law deposeth and saith that he is a son of JOHN DAVIS and that the said John Davis, his father, decease about the year 1864, or 1865, does not remember exact time, but knew that he died about that time, and that the said John Davis' wife died in the year 1862 and the said JOHN DAVIS and NANCY DAVIS his wife had the following named children:

  1. William Davis, this affiant, born July 22, 1826

  2. Sarah Davis born Jan 15, 1829 - who was married and is now dead, left two heirs

  3. George Davis born  July 29, 1831 - married and hasn't been heard from for 15 years.  Has some heirs.

  4. Sherwell Davis b Sept. 6, 1834 - married and has heirs.

  5. Tabitha Welte[?] born November 10, 1836

  6. Thomas Davis born March 29, 1839 [?}

  7. Rebeca Doherty born March 3, 1842 - married and has heirs

  8. John Davis born March 15, 1845 who is dead - unmarried

  9. Elizabeth Davis born June 26, 1848 died when 3 years old

  10. Carl Davis b August 20, 1854 - unmarried.

The said JOHN DAVIS had three brothers whose names are WILLIAM who is dead, JAMES DAVIS has not been heard from for 40 years, and  GEORGE DAVIS.  None of the said brothers was married except JAMES and GEORGE who left heirs surviving to his best knowledge and he further states that his father's name was GEORGE DAVIS who died in Roane County, Tennessee several years ago and that this affiant is a lawful heir and entitled to inherit of his, the said George Davis estate.

Dear Sir

I send you affidavit of WILLIAM DAVIS of this place as to identity of himself as heir of GEORGE DAVIS who died in your County several years ago.  you will investigate and collect amount due the said William Davis.  There is a man in your county whose name is GEORGE DAVIS who is an Uncle of William can give you information as to our cliant, and any additional papers you wish William of this place to fill out, you will fill out and send to me, and I will attend to the same.  The endorsed affidavit discloses all William knows about the matter that he can recollect at present when collected remit to me t Clay City, Ill, less your fees.
