GREEN FAMILIES

THOMAS GREEN (1770-1842) married (1792 in Pittsylvania County, VA) AMY KEESEE  (1776-1854). They brought their fine family from VA to Roane in 1811. He bought (E, p. 239) 50 acres from Lewis Kirkpatrick in Swan Pond, and later 100 acres on Emory River from Thomas Hall (E, p. 523). In 1826, Thomas Green was paying taxes on 372 acres, and his sons Theoderick and Bluford, were living nearby. Thomas' name appears in various records, but in general, he maintained a low profile. Thomas died in 1842, and Amy died in 1851. They are buried in the Swan Pond Methodist Church Cemetery. Thomas and Amy had the following children:


 

WILLIAM M. GREEN (1795-) served in the War of 1812 (no record). He married (1819) MARY SMITH. He died in the 1860's, and his will was proven in Jefferson County, IL about 1862.

VIRGINIA "JINSY" M. GREEN (1796-1862) married (1812) HEZEKIAH BALCH MOORE. They moved to Jefferson County, AL

AVERY GREEN (1798-1880) married (1825, a cousin) MARY TAYLOR. They moved to White County, TN in the 1830's.

THEODERICK GREEN (1799-) married (1821)  MARY HASSLER (1806), daughter of Michael Hassler of Swan Pond. Theoderick died in Arkansas in 1865. Theoderick and Mary's children shown in the Roane 1850 census are as follows: Jonathan (1828), James J. (1830), John (1833), J. L. (1835), Almeda (1838), Theoderick B. (1840), Letha A. (1841), Amanda (1845), Avery (1846), and Milly (1849).

BLUFORD GREEN (1803) married, first BETSY UNDERWOOD. He married, secondly, (1827) CATHERINE DUGGER (1808). They lived in Roane, and had the following children as reflected in the 1850 census: Martha (1834), Mary (1839), Caroline (1841), Jane (1843), Albert (1845), Catherine (1849).

THOMAS GREEN (1804) married TANISY _______ of Georgia. They lived in St. Clair, AL, and he is buried in Springville, AL.

ENOCH GREEN (1806-1859) married (1830) ISABELLA EDWARDS. They moved to White County, TN, and later to Jefferson County, IL.

LUCINDA GREEN (1810) married JAMES SUDDATH, and they were in Marshall County, MS by the 1850's.

AUSTIN LETHERIDGE GREEN was born in Pittsylvania County, VA, July 5, 1811. He was a master of penmanship, and he has left his indelible mark in Roane history with his beautifully written records. Mrs. Emma Wells summarizes in a few words his great accomplishments:

"Austin L. Green wrote with a goosequill pen the Code of Tennessee Laws in 1858. He was for six years in the Legislature, and held different offices in Roane County for 40 years."

Mrs. Willia Alma Moore White of Leeds, AL, has provided information on the Austin L. Green family which was taken from his Bible. He married, first (9-15-1836), DELIA CROW. They had seven children:

Catherine Green (1836) married Alexander Harwell - 9 children; Henry Pierce Green (1839) married Mary Barnett - 2 children; William C. Green (1842-1879); Leonidas B. Green (1844) married Calisty ___. 3 children; Seraphine J. Green (1846-1848); Thomas A. Green (1848), Rebecca C. (1849) married Beard.


Delia died at the birth of Rebecca. Austin L. married, secondly (11-13-1850 on Sunday evening), EMILY R. PRYOR, nee LIGGETT (1821-1905). Austin L. and Emily had nine children:

Elizabeth Green (1851); James Monroe (1852-1853), Willie S. Green (1853), Sarah Josephine Green (1854); Cordelia Green (1856); Austin Avery Green (1858); John Bell Green (1860); Emer Green (1861-1869); Dr. Charles Wise Green (1865-1960 at Swan Pond Methodist Cemetery).

Wil Manoney [wil.mahoney@eds.com] adds that the first child was Elizabeth Jane Green, born 21 Jan 1851 in Kingston, and married John Thomas Mahoney in September 1870. 

In 1871, Austin L. Green was paying taxes on 500 acres on Clinch and on $2,000 in bonds; also on 50 acres owned jointly with the H. Liggett heirs. In 1880, he was paying taxes on 500 acres worth $5,000 bounded on the north by Suddath, on the south by Clinch River, and the east by Emory River, and on the west by J. P. Patton.

Austin L. Green died at his home on his farm on Clinch River, Wednesday, August 5, 1903 at 8:40 A.M. Age 92 years and one month.
