If you are a Halburnt, you are probably kin to me. This material was gathered by my mother, Pauline Halburnt Roberts, and unfortunately, I do not have many of the sources she used--but mostly by personal interview, I would think. We believe the name was originally, Halbert, or some other similar spelling, but got changed when young Rufus James followed his brothers to join the Civil War.
Rufus was born near Marion, NC. Parents having died, as a boy he followed his two brothers in Army during Civil War. Both brothers were killed, apparently near Knoxville, TN. He remained in TN and came to Roane Co. He indicated on an 1880 census that his father was born in Scotland.---- PatMcD
