Squire HENDRIX b. 1782 d. >30 MAY 1835 (Some say he was b. 1770 Granger Co., VA) Squire married 24 NOV 1798 Knox Co., TN Polly HACKWORTH, bond by Luke HENDRIX. Squire HENDRIX was on the Anderson Co., TN tax list in 1805. Signed a petition for a road north of Walden's Ridge on the waters of the Emory River in APR 1812 in Roane Co., TN. He appeared in the 1814 Roane Co., TN tax list in Capt. HALL's Co. (pg 7), with 40A on the Big Emery River and 1 white poll. The 1815 tax list had him in the same location but without acreage. Squire HENDRICK was commissioned Capt. 14th Reg. TN Militia in Roane Co. on 29 AUG 1810. Squire HENDRIX purchased 100A in Anderson Co., TN on the East Fork of Poplar Creek for $400 on 16 FEB 1805 from James PORTER. Deed witnessed by William GAMBLE & Matthew HAWKINS. Squire sold the land back to PORTER for the same price on 14 SEP 1807 but the deal must not have been consummated since Squire (of Roane Co) sold 114A on the East Fork of Poplar Creek in Anderson Co., TN for $500 to Mitchel CHILDRESS on 5 JUN 1809. Isaac STANDIFER and James PORTER witnessed the deed. [Austin HACKWORTH witnessed an Anderson Co., TN deed on 15 JAN 1813 when Isaac LOW sold 10A between Scarborough Ferry and Poplar Creek for $20 to Carter HENDRIX. Gabriel HACKWORTH witnessed the deed as well. Austin was Polly's brother. Who was Carter HENDRIX??] Squire moved to Sequatchie Valley in Marion Co., TN where he was in the 1830 census (p.63; 12013001-0102001, same page as his brother in law Austin HACKWORTH, 210001-010001). After Polly died (<30 MAY 1835) he sold all his land (290A) and livestock to his sonsTarlton and Lewis before moving to Missouri, where he died.

HENDRIX, Morgan 1775/1780-24 NOV 1842
Morgan HENDRIX was born between 1770 and 1780 (some say 1782) in NC, died 24 November 1842 in Knox Co., TN and was son of Garrett HENDRIX, likely of Surry and Wilkes Co., NC. Said to be born in VA by "Tennessee Settlers & Their Descendants", Tennessee Genealogical Society. He married first Elizabeth "Betsy" HACKWORTH (likely the daughter Augustine HACKWORTH). Betsy died between 22 MAY 1814 and 21 MAY 1817. Morgan married second, 21 MAY 1817 in Roane County, TN at the home of Samuel HALL in Roane Co., TN to Sarah "Sally" BOWMAN who was born ca 4 March 1801 in VA and died 1877/1880 in Knox Co., TN. Sally was the daughter of William BOWMAN, a Rev. War soldier born in Amherst Co., VA in 1761 and died in Washington Co., IN in 1843. Morgan HENDRIX lived in Morgan County, TN before 1815. Sally is not listed in 1880 census but was living in 1877. Morgan died in testate in Knox Co., TN. Aron HENDRIX and Sarah HENDRIX were named administrators of his estate in January, 1843. He, and likely she, is buried in the vandalized HENDRIX Cemetery on Jim Jones Lane in the Solway area of west Knox Co., TN on the south bank of the Clinch River opposite the now inundated Jones/Holt Island that is a short distance upstream from the new Solway Bridge. Morgan purchased 64A on the north side of Beaver Creek from Jessee CORMEILL on 11 JUN 1807. He purchased two tracts from Jacob YOAKUM, 200A south of the Clinch River on 30 NOV 1811 & 40A on Copper Ridge on 4 DEC 1811. Morgan sold 126A north of Beaver Dam Creek to John CHILDRESS on 3 FEB 1810. Morgan's estate sold 200A on Buffalo Creek and 40A on Copper Ridge to John R. HARVEY on 9 APR 1859. Another record says Morgan's estate (Austen H. HENDRIX) sold 240A in 2 tracts on the south side of the Clinch River to Shadrick (Shade) CALLOWAY on 8 NOV 1854. These last two transactions sound remarkably similar and may represent the same property, perhaps the first buyer defaulted. Morgan was in the Knox Co., TN 1830 census (p.347; 23012001-111101). Morgan was also in Knox Co., TN in the 1840 census (p. 28; 222010001-0211001). Morgan was tried in Knox Co., TN on 10 JUL 1802 along with Aquilla LOE, Isaac LOE, and James HANNAH on a charge of riot and assault on Polly ENGLAND. They were alleged to have "assembled & gathered together" and "beat, wound, & ill treat so that her life was greatly despaired of.... Polly ENGLAND, single woman (along with a negro woman belonging to Ezekial ENGLAND) at the house of Ezekial ENGLAND on the night of 7 JUL". He pleaded not guilty, was found not guilty, but was required to pay the cost of his prosecution. Several other men were tried on the same charge on the same day and several others apparently escaped identification. Morgan served on Knox Co. juries on Monday 13 JAN 1806 and Thursday 16 JAN 1806. Morgan served in Capt. CHILE's Co. of Knox Co., TN militia in 1806. Morgan provided bond for the marriage of Austin HACKWORTH & Elizabeth "Betsy" Jane RIGNEY on 1 NOV 1821 in Knox Co., TN.

After Morgan's death, his widow placed a legal notice in a Knoxville, TN newspaper to notify Morgan's many children that she intended to petition the court to receive as her dower all the lands possessed of Morgan HENDRIX when he died intestate.
