 17 Oct 1811  Bill of Sale.  MOORE MATLOCK to LUKE MATLOCK, Humphreys Co. TN for $200, plus $100 in trade to WILLIAM HOLLAND.  A Negroe boy named Isaac, to be retained by MOORE MATLOCK until his death.  Wit.  William Waller, Polly Waller.

 17 Oct 1811  Bill of Sale.  MOORE MATLOCK to ABSALOM MATLOCK, Warren Co. TN, for $200, plus $100 in trade to WILLIAM HOLLAND  A Negroe woman named Rhoda to be retained by Moore Matlock until his death.  Wit. William Waller Polly Waller.     [same as David's notes, below?]

 MOORE MATLOCK –May 1843 Will.  Son John, James Matlock, “other children”  Rebecca widow.  Absolom Matlock and William Pickle Exc.

Bill of Sale

STATE OF TENNESSEE Know all men by these presents that I, MOORE MATLOCK of the State and County aforesaid (Roane Co.) have and by these presents doth Bargain & Sell and deliver to JASON MATLOCK of the County and State afforesaid a certain Negroe man named David, thirty years of age and a slave for life time for and in consideration of four hundred and fifty dollars to me in hand paid the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged. I bind myself, my heirs and assigns to warrant and defend said Negroe slave to the said JASON MATLOCK, his heirs, and assigns forever against the lawfull claims and demands of all and every person or persons whatever having any lawfull claim, right or title thereunto given under my hand and seal this twelfth day of March 1810. Bill of Sale

KNOW ALL men by these presents that I, MOORE MATLOCK of the County of Roane, and State of Tennessee hath and by these presents doth bargain and sell unto LUKE MATLOCK of the County of Humphreys and State aforesaid a certain Negroe boy named Isaac, which said Negroe I am priviledged to keep untill my death for and in, consideration of the sum of two hundred dollars to me in hand paid, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged and the said Luke Matlock is to pay unto WILLIAM HOLLAND one hundred dollars in trade it being the amount of the said Negroe Boy which Negroe, I warrant and defend from all person or persons having any demand whatsoever. In Witness whereof, I have, hereunto set my hand and seal this 17th day of October 1811 -------Signed Sealed and delivered in the presence of us ------------

VIRGINIA

Because so many of us feel that we are descended from William Matlock who died in Bedford County, Va. circa 1768, I am listing below data that seems to apply to this William.  I hope you will study it carefully and come up with some ideas how we can best prove our descent.

1702 William Medlock was baptized 19 July New Kent Co., Va.
1734 William received land from Martin King Goochland Co., Va.
1736 William sold land to Robert Bruce in Goochland Co., Va
1738 William sold land to William Witt in Goochland Co., Va.

            [John Madlack married Judah Witt in Goochland Co. 1756. They had known sons, John and Jessee. This couple were later in Pittsylvania Co. and Henry Co. Some of the descendants of the Johns above feel that they were the ones in Greenville Co., S.C. in 1790. We know, of course, that David Matlock was in Pittsylvania and Henry Cos. and died in Washington Co., TN.]

        "This Indenture made and concluded this the twenty-second day of June one Thousand seven Hundred and sixty-two BETWEEN William Matlock of the County of Bedford of the one Part and James Walker of Cumberland County of the other part WITNESSETH that the said William Matlock for and in consideration of the sum of Forty Pounds current Money of Virginia to him in hand paid by the said James Walker the receipt whereof he doth hereby acknowledge and himself therewith fully satisfyed contented and paid hath granted bargained and sold, aliened release and confirmed and by these presents for himself his Heirs and Assigns doth grant bargain and sell, alien, release and confirm unto the said James Walker his Heirs, and Assigns forever one certain tract or parcel of land, containing one hundred and sixty-eight acres, scitute, lying and being in the County of Bedford on both sides of Wades Branch, (a West Branch of Stone Wall Creek) and Bounded as followeth, to-wit, Beginning at a shrub White Oake on Moses Williams' Line, thence off South sixty-two Degrees West one Hundred and fifty-two Poles to a red oake, South thirty -eight Degrees East one Hundred and forty Poles to a Black Jack, East Ninety-six Poles to a Black Jack, North forty-two and a Half Degrees East Seventy Poles to a red Oak, North fourteen degrees East forty-four Poles to Pointers in William's Line and thence along his Line, North fiftysix Degrees West      one Hundred and twenty-eight Poles to-the first Station, Together with all Houses, Orchards, gardens, fences, woods, underwoods, Waters and water courses, thereon growing standing or being with all profitts, commodities, advantages and appertenances whatsoever, to the same Belonging or in any wise appertaining and also the reversion, and reversions, remainder and remainders of every Part and parcel thereof TO HAVE AND TO HOLD the said tract of land with all and Singular the appertenances unto the said James Walker his Heirs and Assigns, to the only proper use and Behooff of him the said James Walker his heirs and assigns forever, and the William Matlock for himself and his heirs and said land and    premises with their and every of their appertenances to the said James Walker his Heirs and Assigns shall and Will Warrant and forever Defend, by these Presents against any Person or Persons, Whatsoever having or Lawfull claiming any Right or Title in or to the same or any part or parcel thereof and the said William Matlock for himself and his Heirs doth grant, covenant and agree to and with the said James Walker, his Heirs and Assigns in manner and form following, Viz that the said. William Matlock at the time of Sealing and Delivery of these Presents is and Stands seized of an Inheritance Indefeasable Estate in fee simple of and in the Premises and that he hath good right and absolute authority to sell and convey the same in manner and form aforesaid and the same shall forever remain to the said James Walker his Heirs and Assigns freely and clearly, exonerated of and from all manner of other former Bargains, Sales, Titles of Dower and all others, rights and Estates,  Whatsoever, In Witness whereof the said William Matlock, hath hereunto set his Hand and fixed his Seal the day and year above written.

     At a Court held for Bedford County May 25, 1762 This Indenture and Memorandum of Livery of Seisen hereon Indored were acknowledged by William Matlock Party thereto and Orderd to be recorded and Elizabeth the wife of the said William (she being first privily examined according to Law) Relinquished her right of Dower in and to the land and Premises conveyed by the said Indenture.

1769 The estate of William Matlock was inventoried in Bedford Co., Va.

In 1771 David Matlock of Pittsylvania Co., Va. sold land to William Page of Bedford Co. (232 acres). No watercourses mentioned. Other adjoining landowners mentioned were ____ Kitchen, Steven Chinalt and ____ Stovall. Witnesses were: John Merritt, David Martin and James Walker.

In August 1772 David Matlock of Pittsylvania Co., Va. sold to William Butler of Bedford Co., Va. land in Bedford Co. on both sides of Stonewall Creek.

We know by deeds that Moore Matlock was in Halifax Co. 1765, 1767, 1777 and 1780.  He does not appear on tax list for 1782 but wife Jane does. She does not show on 1785 list.
