After hitting many brick walls in search of our Holland ancestors, several researchers have decided to take a fresh look at available records, old legends, previously published family histories, etc. to see if we might find new clues in sorting out the old Peter Holland of VA family in particular, and the Roane County area Hollands in general. Many times the quest involves finding out who is NOT of a particular line. |

POSSIBLE CONNECTION TO WASHINGTON CO. TN/NC (Early)
TIMELINE - 1801-1830s Roane
1796 William HOLLUMS, Jr., is on the Knox Co. delinquent Tax List from Capt. Beard's Co., In same listing, a James HALLUMS [per Marje Watts]
1801-- Roane (and Anderson) established from Knox. An 1802 Tax list is extant, and it does not have any HOLLAND names, nor does the earlier petition to form Roane. Knox records not yet checked.
1803-- LYDDAH HOLLAND m Charles Beckett on 05 Mar 1803 in Roane County. One cannot imagine this woman being the daughter of anyone except one of the two following men, unless there were parents just across the line in an adjoining county. (Not checked) Charles Beckett is on 1805 Tax List. I don’t find him on Roane 1822-1827 tax lists, or 1830 census. He appears to be in 1810 Lincoln Co. TN.
1805--Tax list has two Hollands. (Not listed beside each other, as one might expect if it was father and son, or brothers--but not necessarily the case) WILLIAM HOLLAND and JOHN HOLLAND. These men would have been between age 21 - 50. Also a WILLIAM HELLEMS
1805--Mentions of WILLIAM HOLLAND in land transactions.
1806--Mention of PETER HOLLAND as a witness in land survey. Peter Holland is listed on Knox Co. Tax List [per Marje Watts]

William HOLLAND (Apr 1815) 2 ferries16 others listed (Jan-Apr 1815)
1807--Rhea County established from parts of Roane
1807-- PETER HOLLAND married Polly Lea on 19 Jan 1807 [notice that in 1830 Rhea County there are too Lea families next to John Holland] In 1805 Tax List are Samuel Lea, Francis Lea and David Lea. See Lincoln County TN Notes. Since Peter is not listed on the 1805 tax list, we might consider he is not of age in 1805 but son of William or John, or he may have just arrived in the area? The LEA family is associated with MATLOCK, but we don't know enough about LEAS to draw any conclusions yet.
William Mathis married (1) Sarah Littleton and (2) Polly Helms 26 Oct 1847 in Roane Co., TN. William and Polly had:
Nancy b. 1848, Kinchen b. 1850, Stephen b. 1852,Margaret b. 1854, Jenetta b. 1856, Caroline b. 1859. William Helems age 8 is on the 1850 census record with William and Polly. He must be from a previous marriage? [possibly HOLLAND?] Sarah Littleton was the dau of Thomas and Mary Matlock Littleton.1808--WILLIAM HOLLAND listed on a petition
1808--WILLIAM HOLLAND m. Mary Short on 9 Apr 1808.
This William is quite possibly the one who appears in 1830 Roane Census, age 60-70, wife 30-40. No way to know if this is the William who was on 1805 Tax List.William and Mary Short Holland family
1809-- POLLY HOLLAND mar Ila Dossett on 10 Nov 1809. This woman cannot be daughter of William and Mary Short, although it does not eliminate the possibility of William having a first wife, especially in view of age difference??? Nor do we know if Polly was a widow. Appear to be in Lincoln County, TN by 1830. [On 07 Dec 1811 John Dossett mar Elizabeth Coatney, Wm. Coatney security. ]
See Lincoln County TN NotesAccording to Jack Buster [avdata@wave.net] Polly and Ila/Ili Dossett children were:
William Dossett b. 1810-1820, d. 1840-1850 - Likely, but not proven.
Asa Dossett b. 20 Sep 1813, d. 9 Jun 1892 m. Sarah Lennard - Proven
James Holland Dossett b. 1823, d. 1870-1879 m. 1st Nancy , 2nd Elizabeth - Proven

1817-- Morgan County TN formed from parts of Roane
WILLIAM
HOLLAND, REV. WAR SOLDIER,
& LAVINA/LOVINA/LOVEY LEWIS HOLLAND
(he died in Morgan County, TN)
This man, born b 21 Sep 1764 Caroline Co. MD, says he married in Guiford Co. NC, moved to KY, and then to Morgan County, TN, where he died. However, some of his named children get married in Roane County. Notes for William and Lavina.
[The TNGenWeb-Morgan Co. site lists two men as Rev. War Soldiers]
John Holland - Pennsylvania
[I believe this is a typo, and should be John HOLLOWAY]
William Holland - Maryland
also, Thomas AdcockThe following marriages in Roane County are most likely the children of William and Lovina, which would seem to indicate the family had arrived in the area by late 1818--whether actually living in Roane or Morgan is not known, or when he arrived.
John Douty/Doughty married BETSEY HOLLAND, on 29 Dec 1818, sec. Samuel Silvey (probably a brother-in-law to John Doughty) John & Elizabeth, (age 51 b.TN) are in 1850 Roane Census. If this is correct, then her parents were in TN in 1799. NOTES
Joshua Eaton, married MAHALA HOLLAND on 20 Mar 1822
Archibald Adcock married REBECCA HOLLAND on 01 Jun 1822 (This couple in 1830 Morgan Co. TN census).
EARLY ROANE RECORDS WITH HOLLAND MENTIONED
JOHN HOLLAND "of Rhea County"
Jan 1817--John Roudon/Rowden Will in Roane Co.. “My 3 sons, 1 dau, 1 dau-in-law, namely Abraham, Laben, John & Tabbith & Susey formerly wife to my son Jose [Joseph], deceased, and JOHN HOLLAND OF RHEA COUNTY, who is to be sole executor.” WILL Rhea County Record Notes
This John Rowden is believed to be born 1738, wife Sarah Echols. It is possible John Holland is related to this family through the Echols family from VA?? Other allied names are HUBBARD, and HOLLOWAY.
It would appear possible the old John Holland of 1805 tax list had moved on to Rhea County. A John Holland appears on the 1819 Rhea tax list (also 1830 census). John Holland of Rhea County researchers believe he was in Georgia prior to Rhea.
A John Holland from PA is on a Morgan County, TN list of Rev. War soldiers, so that could be the John of 1805 Roane too.
1822--The only HOLLANDS found on Roane Tax list between 1822-1827 are WILLIAM HOLLAND Capt. Silveys Co. Tax List for 1822 and Capt. Arnold’s Tax list for 1824. However, Silvey’s list for 1823 was charred right after Henley??? I would expect this to be the William Holland/Mary Short couple. However, Holland names continue to appear in Roane records:
Filed 3 Oct 1827. In Pursuance of an Entry made by JOHN HOLLAND of No. 2441. Dated Oct. 31st 1815, for 12 1/2 acres of land. Founded on part of a certificate No. 568. Issued by the Register of East Tennessee to William Henry for 103 acres of land. Dated January 17th 1814. I have surveyed for the said John Holland 12 1/1 acres of land in said county on the waters of Poplar Creek…. On Arthur H. Henleys line….. Surveyed 2 Oct 1827 by J. Purris, G. Lawhorn and John Shadwick, S.C.C.
Jan 1830 - John Purris estate has notes on many folks, including LEVIN HOLLAND, WILLIAM HOLLAND.
Oct 1830 - Henry Lower estate purchasers. PLEASANT HOLLAND, JOHN HOLLAND FOR PLEASANT HOLLAND [Children of RW William?]
