POPLAR CREEK & Other Streams
in Roane County, TN

From Roots of Roane County, TN, by Snyder E. Roberts, page 72

Poplar Creek enters the Clinch near the K-25 Atomic Plant, and furnishes coolant water for that plant. Poplar Creek has a drainage basin of 136 square miles. Main Poplar Creek extends northeastward through a gap in Black Oak Ridge 16 miles to the bridge on Highway #61 at Oliver Springs. At this point, Mountain Fork of Poplar extends 12 or 15 miles into Frost Bottom [Anderson County] and Brushy Fork of Poplar extends beyond Marlow.

Indian Creek’s headwaters are at the top of Windrock Mountain. The Creek passes through two gaps in Walden Ridge at Oliver Springs. The East Fork of Poplar drains East Fork Valley, including downtown Oak Ridge, and Oak Ridge Turnpike to old Wheat. Bear Creek is a tributary of East Fork. Old deeds mention that the Indians’ name for Poplar Creek was "Bluff Creek" (translation not given). Deeds also describe property location as "on the waters of Poplar Creek."

Roane County has three King Creeks, two Caney Creeks, and two Hines Creeks. White Creek and White Oak Creek are at opposite ends of the county.
