Robert Samuel Roberts was born about 1789 in Pendleton District, SC. He was married in July 1813 in Roane County, TN to MARGARET GARDNER, in the home of her father, James Gardner (b. VA) The ceremony was performed by Chaplain Wesley Walker, a Minister of the Gospel. They had thirteen children born in Roane County.

Although some John J. Roberts did apparently live with Helen Hardbarger, father children, and adopt them, it was not the son of Robert Samuel Roberts. Thanks to the contribution of Rebecca Hall, rhall@cisaz.com who is a descendant, we find John and Etha in the 1860 Missouri Census, along with other children.

Rebecca says:
John Jackson remarried to Charlotte Buster (born 1837 in MO) on 2 Nov 1865 in Fannin Co TX, and John and Charlotte had at least 4 children together; Edna (born about 1868), Eli Benton (born about 1870), George J. (born in 1874) and Rector Preston (born in 1879), all born in Fannin Co TX. (Note: Charlotte claimed to have had 12 children, but I haven’t researched enough to know of any besides the 4 mentioned above.) John Jackson died sometime between 1880 and 1900 in Fannin Co TX (I haven’t found his gravesite yet for an exact date). Charlotte moved to Lipscomb Co TX where she died in 1923.

Deed Book P, page 661 records a conveyance from Wesley Crow to Edward C. Roberts in 1868. The land was located on Big Emery River and Waldens Ridge. Elizabeth's nephew, Lonnie Burns, is of the opinion that two of the children, Martha A. and Henry C., never married. Elizabeth J. Crow Cofer is buried in Riggs Cemetery in Sugar Grove Valley.

The 1880 Decatur census lists Houston as living in Decaturville, and his occupation as "Town Magistrate." Houston is buried in the Morgan Cemetery in Decatur Co. TN.

One Nathaniel Martin, born NC, married two women (1) Rachel (2) Susan Sims. We have Nathaniel with Rachel in the 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900 censuses, but alas, we could never find him in the 1850. It was not clear if Nathaniel Martin had married Rachel by 1850 or a little after but if I remember correctly from the 1860 census, their first child was born about 1852/1853.
According to the census records, Rachel was mother of 3 sons before her death: Robert, John and Augustine. They were in Christian County, MO in 1860.

b. Aug. 12, 1832 d. May 18, 1918On the other side of the stone is carved the name of the principal battles in which he participated:
Chicamauga, Resacca, Franklin, and Nashville.
Near the bottom of the stone is a little verse of warning to the passerby:
"Remember when passing by
You have to lie
And lay as low as I."
