RODGERS/ROGERS Jane D. b. 1804 d. <19 MAR 1869
Known as "Jennie". Born in TN according to 1850 Roane Co., TN census. Married Nelson LADD on 28 NOV 1820 with James Johnson, JP presiding. John C. LADD signed marriage bond. Daughter of Thomas RODGERS and Mary DONALDSON (probable, but not proven; Brashear ROBERTS, who m. Peggy L. ROGERS, present at the estate sale for Thomas RODGERS' estate on 16 OCT 1852, Nelson LADD, Administrator). The book "Tennessee Cousins" by Worth S. RAY said some claimed that Jennie was the daughter of Charles ROGERS & sister to Tienna/Tianna ROGERS who was supposedly the second (Indian!) wife of Sam HOUSTON. This claim is highly unlikely!
RODGERS/ROGERS Margaret "Peggy" L. b. 2 MAR 1802 d. 7 NOV 1879
Married to Brashear ROBERTS on 11 SEP 1828 in Roane Co., TN (Surety by Amos MARNEY). Daughter of Thomas RODGERS and Mary DONALDSON (probable, based on; Brashear ROBERTS present at the estate sale for Thomas RODGERS' estate on 16 OCT 1852, Nelson LADD, Administrator (who m. Jane D. RODGERS)) Member of New Hope Cumberland Presbyterian Church (organized 5 NOV 1824). Buried at Roberts Cemetery in Merriwater Homepark, Roane County, TN. Listed in 1860 Roane County, TN census. There were two Peggy ROGERS listed as charter members of Prospect Baptist Church in Roane Co. in 1826. An Andrew and a Sarah ROGERS were charter members as well.
RODGERS Thomas b. ca 1770 d. <16 OCT 1852
Son of Rev. John RODGERS and (Mrs.) Mary GRANT. (NOT PROVEN) Born in Washington Co., TN? Thomas ROGERS/RODGERS was listed with 200 acres of land in Capt. White's Co., Roane County tax lists of 1828 through 1832. The 1830 Roane Co., TN census lists Thomas RODGERS 001100001 - 01010001. The 1840 Roane Co. census lists Thomas RODGERS 00011001 - 000110001. The 1850 Roane Co. census lists #1168 Thomas RODGERS 80 born in VA, farmer, $1200 in land, with wife Mary 78 born VA and Rebecca P. RODGERS 39 born in TN.
The Standard newspaper series on the LADD family quotes Snyder ROBERTS, historian, as concluding that Thomas was the father of Jane D. "Jennie" RODGERS. (There was a Thomas RODGERS in Charlotte County, VA in 1782 and a Thomas ROGERS in Orange County, VA in 1779.) Married 15 JAN (20 FEB?) 1797 Jefferson Co., TN to Mary DONALDSON, b. 1772 VA, dau. of William DONALDSON & Mary SWEENEY, gdau. of John DONALDSON who emigrated from Scotland in 1716 & settled 1st near Delaware Bay, then in PA, then in the "Holston Country" in what is now TN. The settlement in Roane Co., TN of Thomas' estate, dated 16 OCT 1852, was administered by Nelson LADD and listed wife Mary. Others listed at the estate sale included Thomas L. RODGERS, William J? RODGERS, Jane W(!) LADD, Brashear ROBERTS, Becca RODGERS, William A. C. LADD, Alexander SMITH, and John LADD. The New Hope Cumberland Presbyterian Church in the Wheat area of Roane Co., TN listed the following communicants: Thomas RODGERS, Mary RODGERS, Rebecka ROGERS, and Julian (Juliann?) ROGERS. From other known RODGERS/ROGERS marriages, and assuming these spouses and other RODGERS listed at the sale are offspring, we infer the following children:
1. Thomas Leslie RODGERS b. 1807 Knox Co., TN m. 14 SEP 1833 in Roane Co. Eliza(beth?) B. PICKLE, surety by Brasher ROBERTS. In 1840 Roane Co., TN census: Thomas L. RODGERS 00011001-000110001. In 1860 Thomas L. had land worth $2000 and personal property worth $500. Not in Roane Co., TN 1850 census. Eliza apparently died between 1857 and 1860. The 1860 Roane Co., TN census says he owned $2000 worth of land and had $500 personal property. A Jacob Rothchild, age 22, from Germany lived with him. (Children from 1860 Roane Co. census)
