An Alexander E. Smith resided in Cocke Co., TN and may have been related (brother?) to Joshua Smith. This Alexander was named 8 times in the Acts of Tennessee between 1807 and 1826. He served as a trustee for East Tennessee College, Anderson Academy, and Addison Academy. He was a City of Newport commissioner and surveyed the Tennessee-North Carolina boundary.
An Alexander J. SMITH b. 20 JUN 1809 d. 6 JUL 1868 m. Elizabeth ___ b. 22 MAY 1819 d. 27 MAY 1902, both buried at Poplar Springs Cemetery in Roane Co., TN. There is also a military stone for Alexander J. SMITH that says "Co. I 1st TN Inf".
Knox Co., TN deed records show an Alexander SMITH buying property as early as 16 DEC 1801and a total of 250A in Hines Valley, near Hardin Valley where Joshua Smith lived. Several property sales from 1834 through 1859 by Alexander SMITH could have been by our ancestor.
A William SMITH lived in Roane County, TN who may have been a brother to Joshua SMITH. This is based on an apparent son named Joshua living next door in the 1850 census and William's age being very close to our Joshua. The 1850 entries for this family are as follows: page 391, #994 Joseph SMITH 26, TN, wife Eizabeth (ISHAM) SMITH (m. 1847), Martha A. SMITH 1; #996 William SMITH 77, MD, wife Ellender (COLLIER) SMITH (m. 1820 Roane Co., TN); #997 Joshua SMITH 27, TN, wife Eliza (JOINER) SMITH 28, TN (m. 1844), Sarah A. SMITH 6, TN, Solomon J. SMITH 5/12, TN, and William Henry SMITH was born later, 1852 TN. The 1840 Roane Co., TN census has on page 74 Wiliiam SMITH 60-70, John SMITH 30-40, John SMITH 70-80, and Josiah SMITH 30-40 (with 2 sons the age of Joseph & Joshua who may have been William's grandsons). It is therefore possible that there were three SMITH brothers, Joshua, John, and William. They were all close in age and had names in common across families.

SMITH Alexander b. 1801 d. >1885
Son of Joshua SMITH. Married to Margaret (Peggy) GALLAHER on 28 FEB 1824 in Hardin Valley, Knox County, TN. In Roane County on 19 NOV 1830, bought 182 acres on the south side of East Fork Poplar Creek in Roane County his father's estate. He purchased 403 acres in 1837 on Bear Creek from George P. Gammon. He owned 568.5 (536.5?) acres in a land survey in 1854 on both sides of Bear Creek on the south side of East Fork Poplar Creek on the waters of Poplar Creek. In 1871 Alexander and his wife sold two parcels of land to George JONES including land that became the campus of Roane College and the site of George Jones Memorial Baptist Church. The Bear Creek post office (13 SEP 1865 to 19 MAR 1887) and "The Old SMITH Mill" stood on his property between the mouth Bear Creek and Oak Ridge Turnpike (US Highway 95). Elected constable in Roane County, TN in 1853. Served as judge of 1857 gubernatorial election.
A church was organized by the "United Baptist Church of Christ at Sulphur Springs (now Oliver Springs) on Alexander's property on the 3rd Saturday in SEP 1852. Joining the church were Alexander, his wife Margaret, George W. SMITH, Polly SMITH, Jelina (Julina DAVIS who married John SMITH??) SMITH, Polly Ann SMITH, Polly SMITH, Sarah SMITH, and "Arvazona" SMITH. On July 1, 1854 the Church of Christ at Sulphur Springs "received a petition from the "arm" near Welcker's Mill praying to be stricken off and constituted a church of the United Baptist Church of Christ which petition was received and said prayer granted." Among the names stricken off were Alexander, his wife Margaret, George SMITH, Sarah W. SMITH, Charles M. SMITH, Mary SMITH, Margarette Ann SMITH, Elizabeth SMITH, Jelina SMITH, Mary Ann SMITH, and "Arvacinia" SMITH.
Alexander served as a Pvt., Co. A (KINCAID's Company), Benjamin F. WELCKER's TN Cavalry Battalion, a home guard unit (State troops), in the Civil War. His service records show he joined the unit at Kingston, TN on 7 AUG 1863 and was mustered out at Morristown, TN on 5 JAN 1864. The records say he was cut off from the principal command on 1 DEC 1863 at Loudon, TN. Another record says he "appears on a list of Rebel deserters voluntarily taking the oath" in Cumberland Co., TN. and that he was in Co. C of WELCKER's Battalion". Alexander SMITH is presumably buried in the Alexander SMITH/AEC No. 11 Cemetery on government property in Oak Ridge, TN, Roane County. Alexander is not mentioned in the 1880 Roane Co., TN census. The 1870 Roane Co. census lists Alexander SMITH age 70, farmer, $6,000 personal property, b. TN, Margaret age 70, b. TN, Thomas age 20 farmer b. TN, and Charles age 23, farmer b. TN. The 1860 Roane Co. census lists Alexander as a farmer & miller, WELCKER's Mills P.O., 15th District, age 57, $7,000 in real estate and $1,000 in personal property. The 1840 Roane Co. census says 111001-112001 with slaves 0001-1; and the 1830 Roane Co. census says 100010001-20002. All of Alexander's children were literate.

1. Lucretia Ann SMITH b. 20 AUG 1825 d. 16 NOV 1905 Roane Co., TN m. 7 FEB 1843 Roane County, TN Amos Marney RAYBURN (This appears to be incorrect! The 1830 Roane Co., TN census has 3 John SMITHs with a dau. of an age to be Lucretia Ann, one of whom lived next door to Alexander SMITH, & could not be her parents because they were married too late. The 1840 census has no John SMITH with a daughter her age. Alexander SMITH on the other hand had two daughters in both censuses the correct age.)
2. Mary J. SMITH b. ca 1830

SMITH Joshua b. 1760/1770? d. 1830

Joshua bought a slave from John YOUNG in Knox Co., TN on 25 AUG 1803. Joshua bought 500 acres on Poplar Creek on 7 OCT 1818 from the estate of Joseph GALBREATH of Hawkins County (Andrew GALBREATH, exec.), being 1/2 of Grant No. 386 to Stockley DONELSON & Charles MCCLUNG in the future Wheat Community of Roane County, TN. Lived in the Hardin Valley area of Knox County, TN. Joshua was listed in Knox Co., TN concerning "relief" in 1822 in the Acts of Tennessee, Ser. #27, Chapter/Section 117.1. Did not live in Roane County unless in the household of Alexander SMITH (1830 Roane County, TN census lists a male 60-70 years in the household of Alexander SMITH). The Roane Co., TN tax lists 1819 through 1824 and 1826 show Joshua with 500A (East Fork Poplar Creek) and no white polls and various combinations of his sons including William, John, Charles M. C., and Alexander. In 1825 Joshua does not appear and the land appears to belong to John (4 white polls). In 1827 Joshua does not appear and the land is shown as William SMITH's. The sons always appear as one white poll, implying that they lived there. [1819 Capt. NAIL's Co., pg 176; 1820 Capt. NAIL's Co., pg 205; 1821 Capt. JOHNSON's Co., pg 234; 1822 Capt. STOCKTON's Co., pg 19; 1823 Capt. SILVEY's Co., pg 53 & Capt. STOCKTON's Co., pg 55; 1824 Capt. SILVEY's Co.] There were six property transfers between William, Charles, Alexander, and John Smith on 19 NOV 1830 dividing the property of Joshua SMITH, deceased. Charles SMITH paid $800 for Negroes Jeffrey and Mary and William SMITH paid $300 for a Negro boy named Wash. Charles then sold the slave Jeffrey to William for $500. Alexander SMITH paid $1005 for 182A on Poplar Creek. John SMITH paid $776 for 172A on the north bank of (East Fork) Poplar Creek (he later sold to Michael BOYD <1849). William SMITH paid $551 for 137A on Poplar Creek (later known as the "CARMICHAEL Place"). The lands totalled 491A, very close to the 500A "more or less" originally purchased by Joshua SMITH and certainly including all of that purchase.
